Adult Services - Regional Specialist Services

The Southern District Health Board jointly provides regional services in partnership with other District Health Boards and service providers from around New Zealand.

Regional specialist services are provided by both District Health Boards and Non Government Organisations. The services include specialist consultation services and residential care.

ALCOHOL AND DRUG SERVICES

The Southern DHB Mental Health and Addictions Provider Arm has access to a range of specialist Alcohol and Drug services throughout the country. The services are youth and adult de-tox programmes and residential care treatment programmes in centres including Dunedin, Christchurch and Blenheim. Providers that are available for referrals include:

CHILD AND YOUTH SPECIALIST INPATIENT SERVICES

The Southern DHB Mental Health and Addictions Provider Arm has access to specialist Child and Youth Inpatient Beds in Otago and Canterbury. The service provides intensive support and inpatient services to young people under the age of 18.

EATING DISORDERS SERVICES

The Eating Disorders Team provide a regional consult liaison service. The service is a partnership between the Southern District Health Board and Canterbury District Health Board. The purpose of the service is to provide specialist Eating Disorders Team support and guidance to Southern DHB staff and to develop and maintain links between Eating Disorder Teams. The service includes assessment, the development and review of treatment plans, access to specialist support (eg dieticians), and provides ongoing education and training to staff.

FORENSIC SERVICES

The Southern DHB Mental Health and Addictions Provider Arm has regional links with the Canterbury DHB specialist Forensic Service. Services include clinical support and specialist oversight for the Southern DHB Forensic Team. One prison and one community clinic are held each week. The service includes Court liaison and clinical care review delivered each week by a Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist. 3 medium secure inpatient beds are available regionally and 0.7 long-term forensic beds.

MOTHERS AND BABIES SERVICES

The Southern DHB Mental Health and Addictions Provider Arm has a Maternal Mental Health Service. The service is available to all woman who have a known or suspected mental health disorder, during pregnancy and for one year following birth. The service is free and referrals are accepted from a wide range of providers including GPs, Midwives, Mental Health service providers, other agencies and self-referral. The service has links and refers to psychiatrists, obstetricians, GPs, group programmes, psychologists, occupational therapists, cultural support and other community agencies.
