Adult Services - Family Support

Support for families is an important part of Mental Health and Addiction services in Southland. As well as delivering quality services, the primary and secondary sectors have a responsibility to ensure that families are involved in the planning, development and delivery of mental health and addiction services in the District.

The Southern DHB does this through the employment of a Family Advisor and by supporting the activities of other local family led forums and groups. Family representation is also a priority for the Future Directions Southland Mental Health Network.

The Southern DHB also supports families by contracting with service providers who deliver education, advocacy and support programmes to families.


The Southern DHB Mental Health and Addictions Service employs a 0.8 FTE Family Advisor. The Advisor represents the views of families and is involved in the review of in-house policies, procedures and day-to-day operational issues. They sit on interview panels and are involved in planning and priority setting activities including workforce development. Externally, the Advisor plays an important role in liaising with local and national Family groups and networks - sometimes taking a lead role.

The Family Advisor also sits on and attends district, regional and national forums and committees and is often involved in local education and awareness projects and initiatives.

Able - Invercargill Office deliver support and advocacy services for families who are affected by someone else's mental illness and/or addictions. They are based in Invercargill and have a District-wide contract. Services include home visits, advocacy, support, education and information regarding mental health and/or alcohol and other drug issues. They employ four field workers working across the district. The service supports approximately 150 families each year.

Able - Central Otago /Queenstown Lakes deliver support and advocacy services to families that are affected by a member’s mental illness and/or addiction issue. They are based in Alexandra and have a District-wide contract for Central Otago / Queenstown Lakes including Wanaka. Services include family advocacy, home visits, support, education and information.

Able - Central Otago /Queenstown Lakes also employ one full-time Activity Group Coordinator who runs activity group programmes at the Alexandra Office for people recovering from a mental illness.
