Adult Services - Alcohol and Drug

The misuse of alcohol and drugs often has a compounding effect on any adult who has a mental illness. This misuse is sometimes as an outcome of the mental illness/problem or can be one of the contributing factors.

A wide range of secondary specialist mental health and alcohol and drug services and resources are available to adults. The Southern DHB’s Provider Arm is the main provider of alcohol and drug services and also contracts with a number of community based organisations.

These providers deliver a diverse range of specialist services across the district from a number of different venues and locations. These services are available to any adult in the District.

SOUTHERN DHB DRUG AND ALCOHOL SPECIALIST SERVICE

The Southern DHB Mental Health and Addictions Provider Arm delivers a diverse range of services to adults aged 18-65 in both community and in-patient settings. The services are delivered by multi-disciplinary teams from Southern DHB Mental Health Centres in Invercargill and Wakatipu. The service sees approximately 450 people each year. The service consists of:

  • Drug and Alcohol Services: Outpatient treatment programme including individual counselling, assessment, consultation and follow-up. They also provide an Opioid Substitution Treatment Programme for those severely affected by misuse of opiates/opioids and associated intravenous drug use.
  • Specialist regional AOD services are also available for local service users including withdrawal and stabilisation programmes and residential care in Christchurch, Dunedin and Blenheim.

GORE COUNSELLING CENTRE

The Gore Counselling Centre provides Alcohol and Drug Counselling services to anybody aged 18 and over in the Gore District. They employ 3 part-time AOD counsellors who provide assessment, counselling and treatment services to their clients. Access to the service is via self-referral or referral from any other agency including GPs, Probation, Community Mental Health and others. There is no cost to the client for our service as it is funded by the Southern DHB.

NGA KETE MATAURANGA POUNAMU TRUST

We deliver a free professional and confidential service for people who are concerned about their own or a Whanau member’s alcohol or drug use.

We offer 1 on 1 counselling support for Youth (12-21) and Adult (18 years and older) and an Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Open Support Group weekly on a Wednesday at 10.30-12pm. Like all of our services this group is for individuals and their whanau affected by gambling, alcohol and drugs.

We offer group education, mobile and late night service by appointment. Any agency can refer to this service along with self-referrals.

SALVATION ARMY

The Salvation Army delivers an Alcohol and Drug Counselling Service to adult clients aged 20 and over with mental health and alcohol and drug problems. They employ one full-time counsellor. The service is Invercargill based and is a district-wide contract. The service supports approximately 60 people each year.
